🍵 Catastrophic peppermint tea related hard drive failure.
💻 What's the best GNU/Linux laptop in 2024? Dell XPS 13 served me well.
@chris I would tentatively recommend framework, they have niggles but the concept is good
@nebogeo good idea, will check it again, thanks! Have you used one?
@chris Yeah daily... had some teething problems (something with the microphone) but they sent a replacement. I have to clean it out occasionally to stop it overheating, but all of this is very easy to do - e.g. every component has a QR code to a page on how to replace it with videos. Also the interchangeable ports are good, so you can choose your mix of usb/hdmi/sdcard slots.
@nebogeo sounds really cool, will investigate. Thank you!
@chris RIP Dell
any plans on trying to fix it?
@luisfcorreia yes will go to the shop tomorrow! I'm not optimistic. 😅
@luisfcorreia I was planning to keep the same machine and upgrade memory + disk. Maybe it's still possible. 🤔
@chris I've fixed a friend's dell xps that took a burgundy wine cup on the keyboard.
It still works today, but took some battle scars
@luisfcorreia wow, great. So there is hope. 🙏
@chris it only took a daughet board and a new keyboard, all less then 100€
BUT it depends a LOT on what really happened to yours
@chris fun fact, the owner was live streaming, dropped the wine glass and only stopped the stream one hour later. I bet there's proof on stream :)
@luisfcorreia ha ha wow 🍷
Managed to boot the device again. Making sure my backups are fresh now. I don't like the drive errors I saw before it died so I'll plan for a failing drive.
